Results: 12 movies in 2012

As planned, we limited ourselves to 12 movies in 2012. It was a struggle at times, but here’s how we fared:

  • watched 15 different movies

  • total cost was about $200

- theatre tickets: 11 x ~$15 each = $165

- iTunes rentals: 6 x $5 each = $30

- dvd rentals: 2 x $2 = $4

  • each watched about 25.5 hours

  • works out to $3.9/hour of entertainment

So, compared to 2011, we watched 1 day’s worth of movies instead of 5 and saved about $500. We could have easily made up the difference with TV episodes, but I’m pretty sure we cut down on that too by canceling Netflix.

Movie selections

We ended up watching 9 movies together and each chose 3 to watch with friends or on our own.

David’s picks:

  1. The Avengers – Expected better than “aliens invading!”, but Wedon’s success is well-deserved.

  2. Prometheus – Plot was too familiar for my liking. Would have preferred something fresh.

  3. The Adventures of Tintin – Could not resist reliving some of my childhood.

Lacey’s picks:

  1. We Bought a Zoo – Jason Bourne tackles zookeeping.

  2. Big Miracle – Based on a true story. Made her cry.

  3. Twilight: Breaking Dawn 2 – She’s just happy it’s over.

Finally, the movies we watched together:

  1. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows – Urban camouflage FTW.

  2. 50/50 – Thoroughly enjoyed. And shot in Vancouver.

  3. Moneyball – Can’t argue with maths.

  4. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy – Great acting. Pacing was too fast IMO.

  5. The Dark Knight Rises – Wish I had subtitles for Bane’s Connery-meets-Vader voice.

  6. What to Expect when Expecting – I am not proud of this, but it was very à propos.

  7. Monsieur Lazhar – Interesting look into the education system. Our only Canadian and “foreign” language movie.

  8. Skyfall – Loved it. Let’s overlook the anachronisms.

  9. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Not a fan of the additions but enjoyable nonetheless. The HFR was hardly noticeable. We both decided we prefer 2D given the option.

2013

We’re planning to repeat the experiment again this year. Some movies on our radar:

  1. Star Trek Into Darkness

  2. Iron Man 3

  3. Now You See Me (Lacey cannot resist heist movies)

  4. Much Ado About Nothing (Whedon tackles Shakespeare??)

  5. The Lone Ranger (Johnny Depp as Tonto)

  6. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

  7. The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carrell and Jim Carrey)

  8. 42 (Jackie Robinson biopic)

  9. After Earth (Shyamalan’s comeback?)

  10. Elysium

  11. Ender’s Game

There are also a few we missed last year we’d still like to watch, like The Artist, Life of Pi and Brave.
